History of GivingTuesday

GivingTuesday began in 2012 in New York City and quickly spread through social media, the #GivingTuesday hashtag and influencers.

GivingTuesday is a philanthropic response to the consumer-focused Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping events, attempting to turn the attention of Americans to giving after two days of consuming.

Since 2012, GivingTuesday has grown beyond a single national day and is now a year-round global generosity movement of giving, collaboration, First Tuesday fundraising efforts, fundraising ideas and celebration.
